Crystal clear morning skies and a golf course in excellent condition greeted 70 junior golfers from across northern Alberta today in Whitecourt, site of today's stop on the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour.  Despite a number of top quality older juniors in the field, it was two younger players who stole the show today.

Barrett Belland, 15, of the Glendale in Edmonton, fired a brilliant 3-under par 69, a career low both in competition or casual play for the Glendale player, which was good for a 2-shot margin of victory over his 14-year-old clubmate, Tyler Saunders. Saunders' round was also his career best ( can you HAVE a career by 14 or 15?)on Tour.  Demetres Giannitsos of Edson, who won yesterday's tour event at Indian Lakes, and Saunders' older brother Mike tied for third place with matching 75s.

The elder Saunders' score was good enough to earn his way into the field for the season-ending Tour Championship on August 31 at Wolf Creek Golf Resort, joining Tyler in the field. Other spots for Wolf Creek today went to Quinton Guttinger of High Prairie (76), Dylan Barrons (76), also of High Prairie, Evan Johnson (77) of the host Whitecourt club, Mikkel Holt (77) of Athabasca, Hayden Dawes (77) from Stony Plain, and Dave Newbury  of Whitecourt, whose 83 was a distant 2nd to Tyler Saunders' round in the flight for boys born in 1995 and later.  Because Saunders had previously qualified for the Tour Championship, today's spot from that flight went to Newbury.

After a season-high eight junior girls on hand yesterday at Indian Lakes, only two were in the field today, but both players had solid efforts.  Melissa Saken of Edson earned her way to Wolf Creek with an 85, four shots clear of Sandpiper's Paige Bednorz, who rebounded from 'one of those days' at Indian Lakes with a solid 89 today.

Next stop on tour is Thursday, July 2 in Barrhead, which from all advance reports is in fantastic condition.

Code of Conduct

The McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour events.
