On what was perhaps the best conditioned course on Tour this year, 104 juniors enjoyed a beautiful afternoon of golf at the Stony Plain Junior Open, today's stop on Tour. The course hosted the Sun Life Financial Alberta Ladies' Amateur Championship a month ago, and was in immaculate condition. Always well-organized, the Stony Plain event is a highlight of the Tour season. With only four more events remaining prior to the 2009 Tour Championship, qualifying spots are at a premium and the scores today reflected how hard the players were trying to earn their way into the field for Wolf Creek.
Jace Barros of the Edmonton Petroleum Club fired a fine 3-under par 69 today, but that was good for only a one-shot margin over the host club's Louis Dumais and Graydon Woodman, also of the Pete Club. Gage Murphy of Dinosaur Trail GC in Drumheller,Cody Hancock of Sandpiper, and Glendale's Tyler Saunders tied for fourth another shot back at 71. All these players except Saunders today earned their way into the field for the Tour Championship, and were joined by Akash Purewal(78) of Northern Bear from the flight for boys born in 1995 and later and bonus Wild Card qualifiers Alex Rakowski of the Pete Club and Chad Rechlo of Sturgeon Valley, both of whom shot 73.
Dumais' round included a 2 stroke penalty for removing a leaf from behind his ball in a bunker, which perhaps cost him his first Tour win. Kids, KNOW YOUR RULES!!!
We had a good field of 11 junior girls on hand today, and Melissa Saken of Edson came out on top, firing a nifty 77, two shots clear of her good friend and defending Tour Champion Kaitlin Allan. Kristen Lee of the Glendale earned one of the two qualifying spots for Wolf Creek with her 3rd-place 82 and will be joined at Wolf Creek by her clubmate Sydney Johnson-Parker, who shot 89 to gain the girls' Wild Card spot.
Only four events remain on Tour prior to Wolf Creek. The Tour heads south tomorrow to the difficult Innisfail GC, and returns to the Edmonton area on Thursday this week at the even MORE difficult Black Bull Golf Resort. Black Bull is still taking entries, so phone now to get into the field.
