For a while this morning, it looked doubtful that we would eventually get in a full 18 holes of golf at the annual Kevin Hipple Memorial Junior Open at Calgary's Pinebrook GCC. But after the course took on another half-inch of rain overnight in addition to the weekend's storms, the golf course staff did a fantastic job in preparing the course for play. A total of 89 juniors from as far away as Edmonton and Whitecourt were on hand for one of the Tour's three memorial tournaments, named in honor of a Pinebrook junior that passed away far too early in life a quarter century ago. The club opens their doors for juniors on this date every year, and it is a wonderful opportunity for kids that might not normally get a chance to play Pinebrook to test their skills on this beautifully prepared layout.
Ryan Kerr (at R in picture below) of Calgary Elks made his crosstown drive well worthwhile today, firing an even-par 71 to edge Jason Thiels of Olds by one stroke. Brett Hogan of Willow Park finished solo third at 73, with Travis Labelle of the Edmonton Petroleum Club and Hogan's clubmate John MacKinnon another shot back with matching 74s. Kerr, Hogan, Labelle and MacKinnon all earned spots in the field for the fast-approaching Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 31 with their efforts today. Joining them will be Scott McNichol of Canyon Meadows, whose 84 was tops for boys not previously qualified in the flight for players born in 1995 and later.
Evann Parker ( at L in picture) of Pinebrook (80) was low today among the nine junior girls on hand, four shots clear of Country Hills' Mandy Wong. Wong qualified for Wolf Creek, as Parker had earned her spot earlier in the year. Casara Hong of Country Hills, site of tomorrow's Tour event, was third with an 89.
Thanks so much to the staff and Board of Pinebrook GCC for their hospitality today. The burger and chicken buffet was superb, with fresh salads, fruit and pastries making the meal one of the best on Tour this summer.
