What we lacked in quantity today in terms of numbers of entrants at Pine Hills GC in Rocky Mountain House, we more than made up for in the quality of the play of those on hand. The competitors were able to enjoy a beautifully groomed golf course under ideal scoring conditions. Overnight rains had softened the greens and the kids took dead aim today at the flagsticks.
When the cards were in, Blake Roberts of Broadmoor in Sherwood Park and Brennan Swanson of Calgary's Country Hills GCC and tied for low overall with scores of 1-under 71. Carlin Spink of Whitecourt was one shot back at even-par 72, with Stony Plain's Louis Dumais another shot in arrears at 73. Both Roberts and Swanson were 0 for 1 this year in playoffs, with Roberts having been defeated last week at Indian Lakes and Swanson ending up runner-up in the season's lid lifter in Golden, BC in late May. Something had to give today, and after both players missed tough 4-foot sidehillers for par on the first extra hole, Roberts' par-4 on the second hole of sudden death brought him his first win of the season. Roberts and Swanson had both previously qualified for the Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 31.
Qualifying spots today went to both Spink and Dumais, along with Wild Card qualifiers Josh Belbar of Broadmoor and Steven Davis, playing out of RedTail Landing this year. Robert Flaman-Haley of Red Deer earned his spot for Wolf Creek from the flight for junior boys born in 1995 and later.
No junior girls were entered today.
Next stop on Tour is tomorrow in Olds, with another Central Alberta Tour stop on tap on Thursday in Lacombe for the Jordan Brand Memorial Junior Open.
