It looked like we would get soaked this morning, and when the players were finished, another rainstorm was looming on the horizon, but in between, 74 juniors enjoyed a wonderful summer day in Olds for todays' stop on Tour. In fact, there were still several players in the pro shop redeeming their prize vouchers when a wicked hailstorm pelted the course! We got VERY lucky today with the weather, needless to say.
On the course today, Riley Fleming of Country Hills continued the recent trend on Tour with the tournament champion coming out of the flight for junior boys born in 1993 and 1994. Fleming fired a fine 1-under par 71 today, good for a 4-shot margin over the host club's Spencer Dorowicz, also from the 93/94 flight. They left the older players behind, as Kyle Wilson of Lakeside and Olds' Jason Thiels and Matt McDonald topped the flight for players born in 1990/91/92 with a 3-way tie at 76. All five of these players earned their way into the Tour Championship at Wolf Creek with their play today, along with Three Hills' Theoren Olver, whose 80 bested the flight for junior boys born in 1995 and later.
We had a very strong field of 7 junior girls on hand today, including several tuning up for next week's Alberta Junior Girls' Championship at Calgary's Canyon Meadows. Kirsty Macdonald of Banff Springs came out on top with a steady 80, three shots clear of Evann Parker of Pinebrook and Ali Cronkwright of Priddis Greens. Megan Paul of Canyon Meadows was fourth with an 85.
Next event this week on Tour is Thursday in Lacombe, which always attracts a good field. Lacombe organizers are closing entries Wednesday at noon, so if anyone has any thoughts of still entering the Jordan Brand Memorial Junior Open there on Thursday, phone Lacombe first thing tomorrow!
