With only one more event remaining on the 2009 Tour schedule after today's tournament in Nanton, qualifying spots for the August 31 Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort are at a premium. We had 63 juniors on hand today from as far north as Edmonton and as far south as Lethbridge trying to earn a coveted spot in the field at Wolf Creek.
Joel Duke of Sherwood Park's Broadmoor GC made his long trip worthwhile, firing a steady 2-over par 73 to take the hardware today. Duke was two shots clear of runner-up Travis Goulard of Hidden Valley, with Christian Guyette of Glencoe another shot back in third with a 76. Both Goulard and Guyette earned spots in the field for Wolf Creek today, and will be joined by Wild Card qualifier Jeremy Vold of Cottonwood (77), along with Derek Rucki (77) of Lakeside and Zach Baker of Cottonwood (77), who tied for first in the flight for players born in 1993/94. Bryce Melville of Cardiff GC near Morinville was another long-distance warrior today, and his 77 was good to win the flight for boys born in 1995 and later and punch his ticket to Wolf Creek. Melville has had some close calls in recent events, and it was nice to see his persistance and good play rewarded.
On the junior girls side, Ali Cronkwright of Priddis Greens was low in the field of six girls on hand. Her 81 was three shots ahead of Marissa Sambo of Willow Park, with Melissandre Genuis of Bearspaw third with an 88.
Head Professional Kevin Davison and his staff did a terrific job with the tournament organization today, from color-coded leaderboards to a brisk pace of play to a delicious 'build your own sub sandwich' buffet after the round.
On the negative side today, after going five years without a DQ for disciplinary reasons at a Tour event, we had our second incident today in a MONTH! We take the issue of club throwing VERY seriously, despite what seems to be the influence of one Mr. Woods with HIS temper displays on TV virtually every week. Club throwing is not only dangerous for the players and spectators, but totally unacceptable behavior on the Tour, and we will not permit it.
