Temperatures soared into the 30s today at the Montgomery Glen GC in Wetaskiwin as 95 junior golfers from as far away as Calgary, Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie dropped in for the latest stop on the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Canadian Western Bank. The third leg of this week's four-events-in-four-days trek through Central Alberta was very successful despite the heat that sapped the players' energy as the day wore on.
Connor O'Reilly of Edmonton's Derrick Club was top dog today, but just barely. His steady even-par 71 was one shot clear of Edson's Demetres Giannitsos, with Brennan Swanson of Country Hills another shot in the rear view mirror at 73. Wild Card qualifiers for the Tour Championship today included Jay Shackleton of Fort Saskatchewan (74) who was unable to duplicate his older brother Joel's Tour alltime scoring record of 63 set last year in this event. Paul James of Edmonton CC earned the second Wild Card spot with a 75. Brennan Kearney made the trip south from Fort McMurray worthwhile as his 75 captured the qualifying spot for Wolf Creek from the flight for boys born in 1993/94, and the host club's Ben Fonteyne also punched his ticket to Wolf Creek with an 83 in the flight for boys born in 1995 and later.
With a good field of ten junior girls on hand today, two Tour Championship spots were up for grabs and Kaitlin Allan wasted no time in making sure she will be around on August 31 for a possible three-peat. Alanna Jefferis of Belvedere took the other spot with an 89.
Full marks to Head Professional John Wilson and his staff for the organization of today's tournament, especially the quality and presentation of the tournament banquet for the kids. And 'banquet' is indeed the word, as the players enjoyed baked chicken, lasagna, Caesar salad, a fresh vegetable medley, pickles and a 'death by chocolate' dessert tray! John also generously invited all the parents and grandparents who brought the players to the tournament to enjoy the buffet compliments of the club. We were a long ways from burgers and fries today!
Additonal thanks today to Krisin Voss and Paul Sims, representatives from Tour corporate partner GolfingCard.com, who helped with the post-round presentations and brought along extra gifting from Tour sponsor Moxie's in the form of gift cards to hand out to some of the players who had kept exceptionally neat and legible scorecards.
Additional congratulations are in order for 14-year-old Mitchell Bowie of Montgomery Glen, whose 170-yard 6-iron found the bottom of the cup on the first hop today on the 13th hole. This was Bowie's first-ever hole-in-one, the second on Tour this year, and the 15th in Tour history. ( Plus ANOTHER kid with an Ace other than me!!!!)
Last stop in this week's Tour schedule is tomorrow at Camrose for their first time having their Junior Open on the Tour. Kids,,,remember it's supposed to be over 30C again tomorrow, so please dress in light colored clothing and bring that sunscreen!
