For the second year in a row, a sold-out field of 120 juniors dropped in today at the Leduc Golf and Country Club for today's stop on the Tour. This tournament had EVERYTHING!
A sold-out field of a season-high 120 players from across the province. Chamber of Commerce weather. A golf course in great shape. Lots of fine play from the kids, including some younger kids on the rise in Alberta junior golf. A DQ, sad to say ( club throwing, in case you're wondering). A ball down a gopher hole ( free relief). Fantastic organization by the host committee and pro shop staff in Leduc. The now 'Tour Famous' taco buffet and ice cream sundaes! If you missed this tournament, you missed a beauty!
When the cards had been totalled, Blake Roberts of Broadmoor earned his second Tour win of the season to go along with several other top Ten's by firing a 2-under par 69, good for a one-shot margin over 14-year-old Matthew McCourt of Drayton Valley. Hayden Smith of Glendale and Matthew Miller of Two Hills were another shot back tied for third at even-par 71, with three more players at 72, including Brennan Swanson of Country Hills, Ryan Craig of Glendale, and Jeremy Novakowski of Grande Prairie.
Smith, Craig, Miller and Novakowski were all fresh qualifiers for the Tour Championship at Wolf Creek on August 31 with their play today and will be joined in the field at Wolf Creek by Jared Nicolls of Ponoka from the flight for boys born in 1995 and later, and Junior Girls winner Candace Dechant of Glendale, whose 85 was best from the field of eight junior girls on hand today.
Next stop in a busy week on Tour is tomorrow at Montgomery Glen GC in Wetaskiwin. We just spoke to the pro shop at 5 p.m. today and their entry is closed. However, if anyone still wishes to go to the course tomorrow morning for their 9 a.m. shotgun start and hope for a 'no show', they may take their chances and do so. Head Professional John Wilson told me that kids were phoning as late as 4 p.m. today, but had to be turned away. ENTER EARLY!!!
