Four's were wild today in Lacombe. Ninety-four players, a season high. Four birdies by tournament winner Eric de Wit of Red Deer. Four bogeys by de Wit and he also made four chip-ins! FOUR scoring tables available to process the scorecards after the round, as the host committee did a terrific job in recruiting volunteers to help with registration and scoring.
Overnight rains had made the Lacombe course very wet and the players were allowed to play under "lift, clean, and place" rules to combat the soggy conditions. But rains held off during play today, and the 94 juniors made their way around the course at a generally brisk pace of play. de Wit, playing out of the Red Deer GCC, made the most of the conditions today and his even-par 71 was three shots clear of Scott Ellen of the host club and Jordie Weich of Innisfail who were tied for second. All three players earned spots in the season-ending Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort with their play today. Also qualifying today were Jesse Teron (80)of Red Deer, who survived both a 1:30 a.m. flight arrival from a tournament yesterday in Toronto, and a 5-player playoff from the flight for players born in 1993/94. Matt Williams of Calgary's Pinebrook GCC fired a 78 to top the flight for junior boys born in 1995 and later to also qualify for Wolf Creek.
Today's Junior Boys' Champion Eric de Wit (r) and Junior Girls' Champion Megan Paul (l) braved the cool, wet conditions in Lacombe to earn their first Tour wins.
We were very pleased to see a season-high 11 junior girls on hand today, many of whom were tuning up for next week's Alberta Junior Championship. Megan Paul of Canyon Meadows was low today with and 84, and will be joined at Wolf Creek by runner-up Marisa Sambo of Willow Park, two shots in arrears at 86.
Next events on Tour will be Tuesday, July 14 in Carstairs, followed on July 15 in Strathmore.
