Three separate sudden-victory playoffs were required to settle all bets today at the Indian Lakes Junior Open at Enoch, just west of the Edmonton city limits. The main show was between Demtres Giannitsos of Edson and Blake Roberts of Broadmoor, who had tied for low overall gross after each fired 1-under par 71s. Giannitsos captured the title win a par-4 on the first playoff hole to earn his first Tour title. Giannitsos finished 12th at the 2008 Alberta Junior Boys Championship and is looking forward to improving on that result in the 2009 Alberta Junior coming up in two weeks in Grande Prairie.
Demetres Giannitsos of Edson and Kylie Barros of the Edmonton Petroleum Club (below left)are all smiles after their wins today at Indian Lakes GC.
Conor Underwood of Broadmoor and Jeremy Marshall of Highlands tied for 3rd at even-par 72 with three more players T5th at 74. Giannitsos, Underwood and Marshall all earned their way into the field for the August 31 Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort with their results today.
The other playoffs today were to decide two more qualifying spots at the season-ending Tour Championship. In the flight for boys born in 1993/94, Louis Dumais of Stony Plain and Logan Morin of the host Indian Lakes club tied at 76, but Morin won the spot from this flight for Wolf Creek with a spectacular eagle-3 on the par-5 13th hole used for the playoff. In the flight for boys born in 1995 and later, Glendale's Tyler Saunders two-putted for birdie on the same hole to capture his spot over Jason Martens of Windermere. Saunders and Martens each also shot 76 in regulation play.
A season-high total of eight junior girls was on hand today, which was very encouraging. Tour veteran Kylie Barros captured her umpteenth Tour Title with a steady 80, eight shots clear of Edson's Melissa Saken. Susie Edgecombe of the Derrick and Ironhead's Teri-Lynn Adams tied for third with 94s.
The Tour moves northwest tomorrow to the challenging Whitecourt G&CC, and to the always immaculately-conditioned Barrhead GC on Thursday, July 2.
