The 2009 McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour kicked off in fine fashion today under warm sunny skies and fantastic Rocky Mountain scenery in Golden, BC. A total of 44 junior golfers from the Kootenay Valley and Alberta locations as far away as Edmonton and Red Deer made their way to the beautiful Golden Golf Club, one of BC's finest golf courses. The host club's organizing comittee did a terrific job, with a post-round skills competition also on the menu to keep the players occupied after their rounds.
Two exciting sudden-victory playoffs were required to sort out the winners after everyone had posted their scores. In the junior boys' division, Chris Cooke of Canmore and Brennan Swanson of Calgary's Country Hills GCC tied with 1-over par 73s. On the first hole of the playoff, both players were on in regulation, but after Brennan's 20-footer barelyslid by the edge of the hole, Chris stepped up and poured in his 15-foot birdie effort. Maybe a good thing it hit the hole, because it was going at least 5 or 6 feet by if it had lipped out! Nolan West of Rocky Mountain House was solo third at 76.

In the junior girls' division, one stroke separated 3 players at the conclusion of 18 holes. Cooke's younger sister Angela was making her first ever competitive tournament something to remember, as she tied for first with defending tournament champion Jacqueline Phillips of Banff Springs with matching 98s. Kaily Trask of the host club was another shot back in third place with 99. In the playoff, Phillips made a routine par-4 to edge Cooke and also earn her way to the 2009 Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 31.

Also earning their spot at Wolf Creek on the boys side in addition to Swanson (shown above), Cooke and West were Jack Wood (78) of Banff Springs in the flight for boys born in 1995 and later, and Wild Card Qualifiers Cody Bokestyn and Ryan Pasqua of Cranbrook, Alex Cartwright of Canmore, and Golden's Levi Trask, all of whom shot 77.
Next event on Tour is in Drayton Valley on Saturday, June 13.
