Most of the summer, we have been telling Tour players that perhaps the most difficult course they will play all summer on Tour will be Black Bull Golf Resort at Ma-Me-O Beach. Today, under overcast and at times drizzly skies, the course maintained its reputation as one of Alberta's most challenging golf courses.
With an excellent field of 91 juniors on hand from across the province, only a handful were able to break 80, which made the 2-under par 71 turned in by Derek Field of Calgary Elks all the more impressive. Field managed his game beautifully, often hitting irons off the tee to keep the ball in play on the tight Black Bull fairways. He offset two bogies with four birdies to fire one of the more impressive scores on Tour this summer, given the difficulty of the course.
Field ( shown at left) was 6 shots ahead of runner-up Luc Bruyere of Broadmoor, who became the first player in Tour history to qualify for the Tour Championship wearing pyjama bottoms as golf slacks! Bruyere's 77 was one stroke clear of his clubmate Joel Duke and Sean Bulger of Cardiff who were tied for third with 78s. All four players earned their way into the field for the Tour Championship coming up at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 31, and will be joined by Michael Harrison (82) of Camrose, who came out of the flight for boys born in 1995 and later.
Three junior girls were on hand today, and Melissandre Genuis of Calgary's Bearspaw GCC was low with a 93, edging Sydney Johnson-Parker of the Glendale by four shots.
Only two regular season events remain on the 2009 Tour schedule prior to the Tour Championship. Nanton's event goes a week today and the final event of the schedule goes August 24 at McKenzie Meadows in Calgary.
