What a perfect day for a golf tournament! Cooler morning temperatures gave way to warm, virtually windless conditions by mid-day as 77 junior golfers from across northern Alberta made their way to the beautifully conditioned Barrhead GCC. On what was easily the best-conditioned course on Tour so far this summer, Cody Roberts of St. Albert's Sturgeon Valley GC captured his first Tour title with a 1-over par 73, one shot clear of Sandpiper's Kevin Piper. Three players tied for third overall, another two shots back at 76 as the players were treated to a very fine golf course in tip top shape. Kudos to the grounds staff at Barrhead for preparing the golf course in such a spectacular fashion!
Qualifiers today for the Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 31 included both Roberts and Piper, along with Piper's clubmate Derek Hanowski, whose 76 was best in the flight for junior boys born in 1993/94. Jake Mykitiuk of the Glendale and Dylan Brown of Sturgeon Valley tied for low with identical 82s in the flight for boys born in 1995 and later, and as time did not permit a playoff, both players were awarded spots in the field for Wolf Creek. Wild Card Qualifiers included Piper along with Jordan Murphy, also of Sandpiper, who came in with a 76.
Melissa Saken of Edson fired a steady 82 today to come out best among the four junior girls on hand. Whitecourt winner two days ago Kylie Barros of the Petroleum Club was runner-up today with an 85, and as both players had previously qualified for Wolf Creek, the Wolf Creek spot went to third place finisher Erin Wiese of Westlock, who fired an 87. Melissa Saken and Cody Roberts are shown at right after their wins today.
Next event on Tour is on Monday at Pine Hills GC in Rocky Mountain House, followed the next day in Olds. Check the website for several upcoming events around Alberta later this month.
