The weather turned lousy today during the last two hours of the Sturgeon Valley Junior Open, sending many of the players into their golf bags for unbrellas, rain gear and mitts! But the 52 players on hand today at St. Albert's Sturgeon Valley GC deserve full marks, as none of them packed it in during their round, despite brutal conditions at times.
Craig Bokenfohr of the Glendale coped the best today, making six birdies and posting a 1-under par 71, despite a double bogey on the demanding par-4 18th hole, which played uphill into a cold wind during most of the day. Bokenfohr's score was two shots clear of the host club's Jared Donnelly and Jake Behiels, along with Paul James of the Edmonton Country Club, all at 1-over 73. Shane O'Neill of Sturgeon, fresh off his win yesterday at the Edmonton City Junior championship, and a member of Alberta's Junior Interprovincial Team next week at the Canadian Junior, was fifth at 74.
Donnelly, Bokenfohr. James and Jesse Kushneryk (81) of Sturgeon all earned spots in the Tour Championship today, along with Wild Card qualifiers Derek Proctor (75) and Shaun Naidu (75), both of Sturgeon Valley.
Five junior girls were on hand today, led by Glendale's Candace Dechant, whose 85 was six strokes clear of Belvedere's Amara Chorney. Dechant earned her entry into Wolf Creek with her performance today.
Q = Qualified for Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 25.
WC = Wild Card Qualifier for Tour Championship.
PQ = Player had previously qualified for Tour Championship.
