Sorry for the delay in getting the Stony Plain results up on the site from Sunday, but I've had two long days Monday and Tuesday with the Innsifail and Northern Bear events.
We had a strong field of 88 juniors from across the province on hand in Stony Plain on Sunday for their annual tournament. Stony Plain has been on the Tour since 1997 and their tournament usually has some excellent results and exciting finishes, and Sunday was no exception.
Chase Teron of Red Deer and Sturgeon Valley's Jake Behiels were tied for first with 2-under par 70s at the conclusion of play, and headed back down the par-5 first hole for a sudden-victory playoff. When Behiels scuffed his drive, and Teron found the green in two, it looked grim for Jake, but he stiffed a wedge to 6 feet and forced Chase to two-putt for his birdie. Jake's birdie putt to force another hole lipped out, and Teron earned another win on Tour. He was coming off a strong performance at the RCGA Canadian Junior Boys' Championship earlier in the week at the Edmonton Petroleum Club and looks poised to make a strong defence of his Tour Championship title at Wolf Creek on August 25.
Several of the top finishers today were PQs,,,previously qualified,,,but players that did earn their way to Wolf Creek today included Jordan Burrows of Sturgeon Valley (74), Cory DiBartolo (75) , Sandpiper's Brent Piper (79), Quinn Bunten-Walberg (75) of Cardiff, Karan Purewal of Sturgeon Valley (80), Carlin Spink of Whitecourt (80), and Jeff Cox (82) and AJ Armstrong (82) in the flight for boys born in 1994 and later. In fact, Armstrong became the youngest player to qualify for this year's Tour Championship as he had just turned 11.
Cox and DiBartolo had left the course prior to the Tour Championship announcements, so if you two kids are reading this, please email me as I need to make sure you have all the information about the Tour Championship.
Kritsen Lee of the Glendale shot a fine 81 to earn her way back to Wolf Creek this year. She bested clubmate Candace Dechant by nine shots in the Junior Girls division.
