How many rounds of golf does it usually take you to make nine birdies?  Three? Four? A  month?

Today, Ryan Moore, 17, of Ponoka made nine birdies in ONE round on his home course in the 2008 Ponoka Junior Open, today's stop on the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Canadian Western Bank. Moore fired a brilliant 6-under par 66, one of the finest rounds in the 13-year history of the Tour. The only major blemish on Moore's card was a double-bogey 5 on the notoriously difficult 202-yard par-3 17th hole, but to Ryan's credit, he closed his round in style with birdies on #1 and #2, as he had started his round on #3 in the shotgun start format.  Great playing, young man!

Chance Beardsworth of Innisfail toured the immaculate Ponoka fairways and greens in only 71 strokes, which most years would have won the tournament. Blake Roberts of Broadmoor and Matthew Miller of Two Hills tied for third with 1-over 73s. All four players earned their way into the Tour Championship down Hiway 2A from Ponoka at Wolf Creek Golf Resort with their play today.  Joining them will be 13-year old Michael Harrison of Camrose who earned the spot available in the flight for players born in 1994 and later with a 79.

Five junior girls were on hand today, which was nice to see.  Rapidly improving Cara Vanderham of Innisfail shot a solid 83 to capture the Junior Girls flight, six shots clear of Diane Strang of Belvedere and Sabrine Garrison of Country Hills in Calgary, tied with 89s.  In fact, we had a very geographically diverse field today, with players from as far away as Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, and Calgary joining the majority of competitors  from the Edmonton and Central Alberta areas.
