Northern Bear GC is ranked as one of Canada's Top 100 golf courses, and one of only a handful of Jack Nicklaus signature-designed layouts in the country. For 98 juniors from across Alberta, it was a tremendous opportunity to enjoy the challenge of this terrific golf course located about 15 km southeast of Sherwood Park. Cool, breezy and sometimes rainy conditions greeted the players this morning, and while some well-known Tour players struggled in the conditions, some lesser-known players stepped up and seized the spotlight.
Drew Horn of the Highlands and Mill Woods' Luke Steeden tied for low overall with 1-over par 73s, and headed back to the 18th hold for a sudden-victory playoff. When Steeden found the trees off the tee, Horn carefully 3-putted for a bogey to secure the championship and his first Tour title. Cody Gonek of Sturgeon Valley was a shot back in solo third on 74. Horn and Gonek both earned their way into the upcoming Tour Championship at Wolf Creek on August 25, and will be joined by Wild Card qualifier Blake Simmons of Cardiff (77), and Jackson Berndt and Hayden Dawes of Stony Plain, who tied for low in the flight for boys born in 1994 and later.
Junior girls' qualifier today was Amara Chorney of the Belvedere with a 103. ( Amara, you got away before I was able to get your data base information for Wolf Creek. Please send me an email,,,Dunc)
Next stop on Tour is this Thursday at Black Bull Golf Resort at Ma-Me-O Beach, perhaps the most challenging course the kids will play all summer on the Tour. Entries are still open at Black Bull until NOON on Wednesday, August 13, which will be the last event north of Calgary for players to qualify for Wolf Creek.
