In the history of the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Canadian Western Bank, we have had some incredible junior golfers come through the program. Many of these players are now on the verge of professional golf stardom, such as Canadian Tour winners Dustin Risdon and Mike Mezei, along with incredible junior stars the likes of Dale Vallely, Todd Halpen, James Love, Michael Knight, Ryan Swelin, Mitch Evanecz, Jordan Irwin and the list goes on and on.
But none of these great players ever had a day on the Tour the likes of which Joel Shackleton of Fort Saskatchewan did today at Montgomery Glen GC in Wetaskiwin. Shackleton, 18, got his day off and running by hitting his tee shot on the 315-yard par 4 first hole to six inches for a kick-in eagle, and when the smoke cleared nine more birdies and two bogies later, the numbers added up to 63 shots, the lowest one-round score in Tour history. And it's not like the course was playing THAT easy! In a field containing many players fresh off impressive performances in last week's Alberta Junior Boys Championship, Shackleton won by NINE shots, which may also be a Tour record! The previous Tour scoring record of 7-under 65 was held by Red Deer's Kyle Morrison, set at River Bend GC in Red Deer in 2004. Congratulations to Joel for this outstanding achievement.
We also witnessed the 14th hole-in-one in Tour history today by 13-year old Devon Buffalo of the host club. Buffalo used a 5-wood on the 174-yard 4th hole, fed the ball in left to right off the sidehill and watched the ball disappear into the hole.
Luke Steeden of Mill Woods finished a distant 2nd today, with a 2-over 74. Mac Keats of Bearspaw and Matthew Miller of Two Hills tied for third a further shot back at 75. Qualifiers for the season-ending Tour Championship today included Steeden, Alex Boyce (76) of Balmoral, Dane Cockroft of Camrose (77), and Shackleton's younger brother Jay (77). Alek Krieger of Breton and Tucker Dougherty of Ponoka earned spots from the flight for players born in 1994 and later with matching 80s. Junior Girls Champion today was Jenn Orcheski of Camrose, whose 90 was 3 shots clear of runner-up Allison Seto of Country Hills.
