Last month at Montgomery Glen GC in Wetaskiwin, Joel Shackleton of Fort Saskatchewan lowered the Tour's all-time scoring record by firing a 9-under par 63. It seems only fitting that during the middle of the Summer Olympics with records being smashed every day that the Tour scoring record for junior girls would fall today as well.
Nicole Zhang, 16, of Silver Springs GCC did just that by cruising around the McKenzie Meadows GC in southeast Calgary with a 4-under par 68, one shot better that the previous record of 69 held by three players. Scoring conditions today were perfect, with a course softened by overnight rains, a complete lack of wind, and flawless greens and fairways. Chelcia Petersen of Glencoe also broke par today with a 71, good for second among the 10 girls on hand. Defending girls Tour Champion Kaitlin Allan earned her way into the 2008 Tour Championship with a fine 74 of her own.
In the junior boys division, Craig Bloom of Carnmoney GCC had a sensational 7-under par 65, three shots clear of runner-up John Moug of Willow Park as nine junior boys broke par. Lance Wesolowski of The Canal at Delacour and Zak Griffiths of Lacombe tied for third overall with 3-under 69s.
The 2008 Tour Championship is coming up a week today at Wolf Creek Golf Resort, ranked over the weekend by SCORE Golf Magazine as the #20 course in the entire country. Bloom, Moug and Wesolowski qualified today, along with Troy Stewart of Calgary Elks, whose 72 was low in the flight for boys born in 1994 and later. Wild Card qualifiers included Wintergreen's Luc Chase(70) and Red Deer's Cody Stout (71) who won a 3 players for 1 spot sudden-death playoff in spectacular style by holing out for birdie from a greenside bunker on the second hole of the playoff.
The last regular season tournament of the year comes up this Thursday in Nanton, and will be the last chance for players to earn their spot at next Monday's Tour Championship. At this writing, spots ARE still available but players interested in entering must phone the Nanton club by tomorrow evening to enter.
