The largest field of the 2008 Tour season was on hand today in Leduc, but for a while this morning, it was doubtful if we might even get ON the golf course! Lightning was raging in south Edmonton, and we pulled the players in off the driving range during their warmup period for safety, but luckily, the worst of the weather held off and we were able to get the tournament started safely after only a 15 minute delay.
Alex Rakowski of the Edmonton Petroleum Club didn't seem to mind the cool temperatures and gusty winds as he posted a 1-over par 72, nipping Joel Shackleton of Fort Saskatchewan by one shot. Four players tied for third at 74, including AJ Mark of Pioneer Meadows, the host club's Chris Porteus, and Edson clubmates Chris Acorn and Demetres Giannitsos. Rakowski had previously qualified for the Tour Chamionship in Whitecourt, but the other five earned their way into the Wolf Creek season wrapup with their performances today. They will be joined by Cardiff's Sean Bulger who topped the flight for boys born in 1994 and later with a solid 76.
We had a season-high ten junior girls on hand today, which was very encouraging. Paige Bednorz of Sandpiper captured her second Tour win of the season today, and I am sure this one was much more meaningful for her. Her 85 was 12 shots clear of Melissandre Genuis of Bearspaw, and her twin sister Delca was in third place with a 101 total. Both Genuis sisters were awarded spots in the Tour Championship.
Q= Qualified for Tour Championship
