The 27-hole Innisfail layout is always one of the top tests on the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour, regardless of which rotation the club presents to the players. If there is golf course in Alberta that combines their level of challenge AND beauty, I haven't seen it! The course was in impeccable condition, and every hole was like playing in a garden, with spectacular landscaping and flowers in full bloom.
But don't let the beauty of this Central Alberta layout lull you to sleep! This is a stern test, and no one in a strong field of 88 juniors from across Alberta was able to do better than 18-year old Brett Van Den Bossche of Country Hills. Van Den Bossche, coming off a solid performance last week at the RCGA Canadian Junior Championship at the Edmonton Petroleum Club, was best today and he could only manage a 2-over par 74 on the treacherous Innisfail greens. He edged Matt Grossi of The Hamptons by a solitary shot. Joel Shackleton of Fort Saskatchewan and Mac Keats of Bearspaw were T3 another shot back at 76.
Van Den Bossche and Grossi both earned their way to the Tour Championship coming up two weeks today at Wolf Creek Golf Resort, and will be joined by other qualifiers today that included Spencer Dorowicz of Olds (77), John McKinnon (83) of Willow Park from the flight for boys born in 1994 and later, and Wild Card qualifier Aaron Haakman of Red Deer. (Aaron, you made it,,,,I know you had to leave early but you are in the data base for Wolf Creek,,,,,Dunc). Junior Girls qualifier today was Janais DeJong Dyck of Grande Prairie (98) as Junior Girls' winner Cara Vanderham had previously qualified.
