For the third time in five events this year, we needed an exciting sudden-victory playoff to decide the champion of a Tour event.  Today's stop was at the incredibly-improved Indian Lakes GC, just west of the Edmonton city limits on the Enoch Cree Nation reserve. Indian Lakes has undergone a wonderful transformation over recent years, and despite heavy rains overnight on Sunday, the course proved to be in terrific condition for 75 juniors from the Edmonton and surrounding area.

The kids were greeted with a brisk wind today, and a very challenging golf course.  Kevin Piper of Sandpiper GC in St. Albert and Mark Reyes of Lancaster Park tied for 1st with 1-over par 73s, one shot clear of Connor Grimes of the Edmonton  Petroleum Club who finished solo third with a 74.  Reyes nearly ended the sudden-death playoff when his  50-foot chip shot on the first extra hold lipped out, but when he ended up missing the 8-foot comeback'er, the two players proceeded to the 465 par-5 18th hole to continue the battle.  Both tee shots were only a few feet apart, and it appeared Reyes had hurt himself hitting his second shot just left of the green, but it was a cramp that worked itself out after a short recovery period.  Piper hit perhaps the shot of the year on Tour this year, flying a 3-wood out of the light rough over a stand of trees to about 25 feet above the hole.  With Reyes in in 5, Piper rolled in an uphill 4-footer for his birdie and the title.

Piper earned his way into the Tour Championship today (Reyes had previously qualified in Drayton Valley), and was joined in the field at Wolf Creek by his clubmate Darren Aucoin, whose 75 was best  in the flight for players born in 1989/90/91, Tom Fuhr (77) from the flight for boys born in 1994 and later, and Wild Card Qualfiers Connor Grimes (74) and Hayden Smith (76).

The Alberta Golf Junior Boys and Girls Championships are on this week in Claresholm and Rocky Mountain House respectively, and while the overall entry for boys today was still solid, we had no junior girls registered.

Code of Conduct

The McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour events.
