What a fantastic day for golf!
Barrhead might be the best conditioned course the Tour players will see this year, and the host committee did a terrific job in making 82 juniors welcome today at the Barrhead Junior Open, today's stop on the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Canadian Western Bank. Warm temperatures and a virtually cloudless sky made for ideal scoring conditions today at the Barrhead layout, located just over an hour northwest of the Edmonton city limits.
Jake Behiels, the 2007 Edmonton City Junior Champion, fired a scorching 3-under par 69 to capture the boys' title, 3 shots clear of Jace Barros of the Edmonton Petroleum Club. Chad Rechlo of Sturgeon Valley and the Derrick's Connor O'Reilly were another shot back in fourth place. All four players earned their way into the 2008 Tour Championship by virtue of their results today, and will be joined at Wolf Creek Golf Resort by Cody Roberts of Sturgeon Valley, Sandpiper's Ryan Dyck and Bonnyville's Connor Moore. All three players fired 76s to lead the pack in the flight for boys born in 1992/93, as time pressures did not allow for a playoff. Brandon Hogue of Leduc fired an 81 to capture the qualifying spot for junior boys born in 1994 and later.
There was some good karma for young Mr. Hogue today, as he told Tour officials of a scoring error at the Drayton Valley tournament three weeks ago. His 97 in Drayton had been inadvertently posted as a 79, and even though he notified the Drayton Valley organizers at the time of the error, he was permitted to keep his prize as the competition had closed. Brandon did not feel he should keep his Srixon Order of Merit points he was awarded for his Drayton finish, and wanted them stricken from the record, which will be done tomorrow. We certainly expect all junior golfers to be honest and forthright about their golf games, but it is still very refreshing to see a young man such as Brandon come forward and have such an error corrected. He earned 100 Order of Merit points today with his finish, in addition to qualifying for the Tour Championship. Well done!
