A small field was on hand today in Athabasca for their Junior Open, but the players that did make the 90-minute drive northeast of Edmonton were treated to one of the best tests on the Tour. Gusty winds made the notoriously difficult Athabasca layout play even harder today, which was reflected by the scores.
Joel Shackleton of Fort Saskatchewan, coming off his Tour all-time scoring record 63 last week in Wetaskiwin, continued his strong play this summer by firing a 1-over par 73 today, good for a 4-stroke margin over Jace Barros of the Edmonton Petroleum Club. Shackleton's round was a real mixed bag, featuring an eagle when he holed out from the fairway on one hole, five birdies, and a four-putt!!! Alex Rakowski, also from the Pete Club, was the only other player able to break 80 today, firing a 78.
Qualifiers today for the upcoming Tour Championship at Wolf Creek on August 25th included James Slamko (81) of the Petroleum Club, Cole Feth (82)from Camrose, and Matthew Holt of the Derrick, whose 85 was best in the flight for boys born in 1994 and later. Wild Card qualifiers were Michael Saunders (85) of the Glendale and Edmonton CC's Senate Patton, also at 85.
The only junior girl on hand today was Westlock's Erin Wiese, who has had a number of good finishes this summer on Tour. Her 102 today certified her for entry into the Tour Championship.
