After eleven years of unbroken great weather, it finally had to happen.  A steady drizzle and temperatures of 6C greeted 133 of Alberta's best junior golfers today at the 12th annual McLennan Ross Sun Junior Tour Championship.  To the kids' credit, they bundled up, slugged it out, and fired some incredible scores given the conditions.

The rain stopped after about three hours, making playing conditions a little more reasonable, and when the scorecards were all handed in, Chase Teron of Red Deer and Kaitlin Allan of the Royal Mayfair had the biggest reasons to smile.  Teron fired a sensational 69, which while not challenging Ryan Swelin's alltime Tour Championship record 66, was maybe even more impressive a result.

Teron was locked in a toe-to-toe battle with Zach Belitsky of Parksville, BC with three holes to play.  Both players were even par at that point, but Teron got up and down out of the greenside pot bunker on #9 West, which has brought many Canadian Tour players to their knees over the years, and Zelitsky missed a 3-footer for his par. Teron then  bombed in a 65-foot anaconda on #1 East to open a 2-stroke advantage over Zach. A closing bogey by Belitsky made the final margin a deceptively large 3 shots.  Matt Grossi of The Hamptons in Calgary finished solo third on 73.

In the Junior Girls division, Kelly Amundrud of Calgary was going for a three-peat, having won the Tour Championship in 2005 and 2006.  Standing in her way though was the Royal Mayfair's Kaitlin Allan as both players tied after regulation with matching 77s.  They proceeded to #1 East for the playoff, and after Amundrud muffed a chip shot, Allan closed the door with a routine par to capture the title, as well as clinch the season-long Srixon Order of Merit. Jennifer Ha of the Glencoe was third with a fine 79 of her own, which most days in this weather would have been good enough to win.

The Srixon Order of Merit standings went right down to the wire as well, with two of the divisions decided by the narrowest of margins.  In the flight for players born in 1988-1990, Jordan Krulicki of Red Deer, a clubmate of Teron's and the 2005 Tour Champion, went into the final round with a narrow lead over Tyler Gust of Wetaskiwin.  Anyone in the Top Ten was mathematically alive, and Teron's 200 points from today's win (points are doubled in the Tour Championship) vaulted him from 9th place to first.  Krulicki's 75 was just outside the top six in his age group and had he finished one shot better, would have earned enough Order of Merit points to hold off Teron.

In the flight for boys born in 1990-91,  Jason Thiels of Olds went into the day with a 50 point lead over Aaron Haakman of River Bend in Red Deer, with the top 9 players still having a chance to win the Order of Merit.  Thiels did not have his best day, opening the door for Haakman, whose 78 was good for fourth in the age group, earning him 60 points and the title by 10 Order of Merit points.  Had Haakman finished one shot worse at 79, he would have been in a 3-way tie for 4th-6th and not earned enough points to scoot past Thiels.  Talk about a close finish!

Red Deer boys swept all three age groups, as Zak Griffiths of River Bend had already clinched the flight for boys born in 1993 and later.  Griffiths played very well all season, and his 695 points going into today was insurmountable.  Ryan Trudeau of Grande Prairie, whose father put on something like 21,000 km on his van this summer taking Ryan and his brother Nolan to many Tour events, finished 2nd in the flight.

Kaitlin Allan's win today was icing on the cake for her in the Order of Merit as well.  She led the standings going into today's event, and only under an unlikely set of circumstances would have not won the Order of Merit.  Her win gave her the title going away.  Lauren Guhl of Windermere and Chelcia Petersen of Glencoe tied for 2nd place in the girls division. This was easily the deepest junior girls' field of the year on Tour, with 7 out of the top 11 finishers from this summer's Alberta Golf Association Junior Girls Championship on hand today.
