It was Griffith vs. Griffiths today in a sudden-victory playoff at the last regular season tournament in Nanton. Joel Griffith of Inglewood and Zak Griffiths of River Bend in Red Deer ended up tied for first place today, each firing 1-over par 72s. Sean Crapo of Priddis Greens just missed joining Joel and Zak in the playoff as he came in one shot back at 73.
In the playoff, Zak looked to be in good shape as he bombed a big drive over the corner of the dogleg on the par-4 7th hole in Nanton, leaving him a flip wedge to a front pin. Joel's hybrid off the tee leaked a bit right, leaving him a punch 5-iron under some branches, but he pulled the shot off masterfully, rolling his ball up to about 12 feet behind the hole. Zak's wedge came up just short of the green, and his chip skidded about 2 1/2 feet above the hole. After Joel just missed his birdie putt and tapped in for par, Zak got a rude lip-out and the title went to Griffith, his first on Tour.
Only two junior girls were on hand today, but both played exceptionally well. Two-time Tour Champion Kelly Amundrud of Calgary CC fired a smooth 74, but was only two shots ahead of Ali Cronkwright of Priddis Greens, whose 76 was a career-best in competition. Congratulations to both young ladies as they tuned up for Monday's Tour Championship.
New qualifiers today included Graham Bartlett of Inglewood (76), Sean Jedrusiak of Canyon Meadows (74), who earlier this summer represented Alberta in the Junior America's Cup competition, and Jeremy Vold of Cottonwood (79). The host Nanton club will have two representatives at Wolf Creek on Monday as Carson Brown (79) and Landon Sjogren (78) earned qualifying spots.
