McKenzie Meadows GC
At times during mid-morning, it appeared that we might get hit with some rain and/or lightning, but the weather held out and a field of 80 junior golfers made their way around the McKenzie Meadows course in southeast Calgary for their stop on the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Canadian Western Bank. In fact, representatives of CWB were on hand today with water and energy bar handouts for the kids to help them along in their rounds. Thanks to Chris Mink and Adam from CWB for being on hand today to help out!
McKenzie Meadows' Steven Scheidt made the best of the windy and sometimes blustery conditions today, firing a fine 1-under par 71, three shots clear of Mitchell Bach of Forest Heights GC near Sundre, Glendale's Zach Belland, and 14-year-old Derek Rucki of Lakeside Greens GC in Chestermere, all of whom fired 74s. Dillon Robinson of Canyon Meadows was alone in fifth at 75. Scheidt and Robinson today earned their way into the season-ending Tour Championship coming up on August 27th at Wolf Creek Golf Resort, and will be joined in the field by Travis Chorley of Jasper, who qualified out of the flight for junior boys born in 1993 and later. Wild Card qualifiers were Sean Crapo of Priddis Greens (76) and Craig Bloom of Shawnee Slopes (77).
We had a season-high total of 18 junior girls on hand today, which is outstanding, considering only 39 girls entered the provincial championships! Jennifer MacKinnon of Willow Park was best in the girls' division today with a terrific 78. In view of the exceptionally large turnout today, we qualified three girls for the Tour Championship. The qualifiers were Alex Steffens of Lakeside Greens (82), Janelle Samoluk of Priddis Greens (85) and Samoluk's clubmate Ali Cronkwright (88). Several of the girls on hand today had previously qualified for Wolf Creek. But it was great to see such a large turnout of junior girls!
