Up to today, we have had 11 hole-in-one's in Tour history, and today's Ace by Derek Butt of Cardiff brings the total to an even dozen.  What makes Derek's effort spectacular was that his was on a Par 4!

Butt one-hopped a hybrid into the cup on the 12th hole today in the Leduc Junior Open.  The hole normally plays from 305 yards on the White tees, but tournament organizers had moved the tees about 35 yards up to entice the kids to go for the green.  Butt made the most of his opportunity and earns a special place in Tour history.  Unfortunately, the rest of Derek's round wasn't up to the same standards, and he ended up firing an 85 on the day.

The big winners today were Sam Rakowski of the Edmonton Petroleum Club, who beat out clubmate Jace Barros on the first hole of a playoff after both players had shot 1-under par 70s. Rakowski's par was good for the win after Jace missed his 10-foot effort for par. Dale Watamaniuk of the Glendale was alone in third with a 73.  All three players earned their way into the Tour Championship at Wolf Creek on August 27 by virtue of their scores today.

Rakowski's younger brother Alex also made his way into the field at Wolf  Creek by firing a 75, good for first place in the flight for boys born in 1991 and 1992. Tieg Fleming of the host club won a spot out of the flight for players born in 1993 and later with an 83, but special mention must be made of the honesty of 14-year old Hayden Smith of the Glendale.  Smith was at first thought to have been the winner of the 1993 and later flight, but immediately came forward to say that he had inadvertently been placed in the wrong flight, as he had been born in 1992.  He wanted to make sure the right player was rewarded with a Tour Championship spot.  As the old saying goes, golf may not necessarily build character, but it certainly reveals it.

Top junior girl today was Kaitlin Allan of the Royal Mayfair, who followed up her win yesterday in Ponoka with another first-place showing.  Allan admitted she didn't hit the ball as well today on way to her 84 as she did yesterday firing a 77 in Ponoka, but he score was still five shots better than runner-up Amanda Woytenko of Jagare Ridge.  As the top four girls in today's field had previously qualified for the Tour Championship, today's spot went to Diana Kastelic, who had left the course by the time the awards were announced.

Two more events remain on the Tour this week; tomorrow in Wetaskiwin and on Thursday in Athabasca.

Q = Qualified for Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 27.

WC = Wild Card qualifier for Tour Championship.

PQ = Player had previously qualified for Tour Championship.

The McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour events.
