It was perfect.

Perfect weather. A perfectly conditioned golf course. Two well-deserving champions and some excited young ladies who earned their way to be rubbing shoulders with LPGA professionals in August.  Perfect.

Today's stop on the McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Canadian Western Bank was in Barrhead, which has always been one of the best-conditioned layouts on the Tour.  Today was no exception as 86 juniors from locations such as Calgary, Grande Prairie, Edmonton and Red Deer made the journey 100 km. northwest of Edmonton.  What a fantastic golf course and in perfect condition.  Anyone would find it well worth their while to go to Barrhead to enjoy their facility!

Today's winners were a proven Tour veteran (all of 15) and an 18 year-old taking down his first Tour title.  Kylie Barros of the Edmonton Petroleum Club earned another Tour title today, firing an 81, good for a 2-shot margin over Kristen Lee of the Glendale.  Chelcia Petersen of the Glencoe GCC in Calgary was third, but joined Lee in qualifying for the season-ending Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 27.  We had a season-high total of 11 junior girls on hand today, which was the last opportunity for junior girls to earn Srixon Order of Merit ranking points that would count to qualify for entry into the Women's Pro-Am at the CN Canadian Women's Championship coming up in mid-August at the Royal Mayfair.

When the Order of Merit points were counted, the four young ladies who earned spots into this prestigious event were:  Jennifer MacKinnon of Willow Park, Chelcia Petersen of the Glencoe, 12-year-old Erin Martens of the Derrick, and Anisha Chong of Lethbridge. Petersen's sister Haleigh, who won the Tour event on Tuesday this week in Rocky Mountain House, was only able to muster an 8th place finish today with a 94 and got overtaken in the standings by Martens, whose 91 today earned her 20 Order of Merit points and moved her past all the players tied with 100 points.  Chong won the tie-breaker for those players at 100 points by virtue of her one win and low gross score of 79.

Boyd started his round out with an eagle-3 on the first hole and never looked back, posting 3 more birdies in his round.  Bateman, who has the distinction of being the Tour's youngest ever tournament winner by virtue of his win at Goose Hummock when he was only 11, almost became a 2-time champion today with a fine 1-under 71.  Chad Rechlo of Sturgeon Valley and Jacob Bearhead of Ironhead tied for 3rd with 73s.  All four earned their way into the field at Wolf Creek, along with Nolan Trudeau Grande Prairie (74) and his clubmate Daniel Bishop(74), who topped the flight for players born in 1991 and 1992. Time did not permit a playoff, so both players were granted entry into Wolf Creek.

Many of the players on hand today will be competing next week in the Pontiac Buick Alberta Junior Boys and Junior Girls Championships in Stony Plain and High River respectively.  Good luck to all Tour players who have qualified for provincials!

For kids who did not qualify for those events, two tour events are on the schedule next week.  Lacombe's Jordan Brand Memorial Junior Open is next Wednesday,  July 11, and Goose Hummock plays host to the Tour the following day at their gorgeous track just north of Edmonton.  Entries are open and available for both events, so phone now to get in the field!

Code of Conduct

The McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour events.
