Overall Top Ten:
Every year I see it. Every year I hear it.
"Innisfail,,,it's not even 6,000 yards from the Whites. Why can't we play the Blue tees? We want a CHALLENGE!"
And every year, close to 100 kids come limping in from one of Alberta's toughest golf courses with their tails between their legs; beaten into submission by lightning fast greens, thick underbrush and bruised egos. But what a gorgeous way to have your head handed to you! I thought we had stumbled into a botanical garden today at this Central Alberta showpiece course. Their landscaping is non pareil ( look it up, kids) with blazing oranges, soothing blues, and outrageous reds coloring virtually every tee box. The course was in its usual fantastic condition and was a joy to the eye.
However, we were there to play golf today, and some kids handled the tough conditions admirably. Jesse Teron of Red Deer won his second Tour event in two weeks, firing a steady 2-over par 74 to edge Gage Murphy of Dinosaur Trail by a single shot. Mac Keats of Bearspaw and the host club's Kirk Williscroft were three more shots back tied for third with 78s. Chas Shields was the only other player in the field to break 80 with a 79 for solo fifth.
This late in the season, many events feature several players in each age division that have already qualified for the Tour Championship coming up three weeks from today at Wolf Creek Golf Resort. This often opens the door for players finishing a little lower in their respective age groups to earn the qualifying spots up for grabs for Wolf Creek, and today was no exception.
Keats and Shields got into the Wolf Creek field today, as did Ian McRae of Cochrane from the flight for boys born in 1993/94. The top three boys in the flight for boys born in 1995 and later had previously qualified, leaving Bennett Williams and Kolby Vold to grab up the qualifying spots in that flight as both players tied for fourth with 87s. I think it is a fair bet to assume Vold will show up at Wolf Creek as his father Ryan is the Director of Golf and owner of the facility! Wild Card qualifying spots today went to Mike Kolthuis of The Ranch and Jason Hoeve of Olds with matching 83s.
Abbey Gill (90) (shown here with Jesse Teron of Red Deer) of the Derrick Club was low today among the six junior girls on hand, beating her clubmate Suzie Edgecombe by four shots. As both girls had already earned their spots in the Tour Championship, the spot today went to third place finisher Delca Genuis (95) of Bearspaw.
Next event on Tour is this Thursday at the possibly even MORE difficult Black Bull Golf Resort. The challenge facing the kids later this week doesn't seem to have deterred them from entering this event, as Black Bull's General Manager Judy Wyler reported earlier this afternoon that they had received close to 90 entries and the phone had been ringing all day. They will close entries at NOON on Wednesday, so if you still are thinking about entering, do so first thing tomorrow!
